LOVEJOY Gear Coupling Hub

Lovejoy gear couplings consist of two hubs (with external gear teeth), two flange sleeves (with internal gear teeth), seals (O-rings & a gasket) and furnished fasteners. Gear couplings are commonly used for connecting process equipment. In comparison to other types of couplings, gear couplings offer moderate misalignment capacity, exceptional torsional stiffness and extremely high torque density....Read more

Gear Coupling Hub

What are Lovejoy gear couplings?
Lovejoygear couplings connect rotating shafts of mechanical equipment by using gear mesh to accommodate inherent misalignment while transmitting power and torque between the shafts. There are caps on the flanks and exterior ring of the gear to allow angular movement between the gears. Gears automatically adjust proportionally to rotating splines with modified profiles. These Lovejoy gear couplings transmit power between the two ends of the coupling through the internal and external gears. Lovejoy gear couplings are very similar to flexible couplings and are capable of high torque transmission, making them ideal for heavy duty applications. They require periodic lubrication (grease) for optimum performance. These Lovejoy gear couplings feature a compact size for limited space applications.

Uses

Lovejoy gear couplings are commonly employed on large industrial machines such as pumps, blowers, compressors & mixers. They can be used in small motion control systems with a polymer sleeve, as a means of reducing backlash.
Lovejoy gear couplings are widely used in the steel industry. These couplings are suitable for applications requiring high torque to size ratio, as well as high speeds. Lovejoy gear couplings with continuous and flanged sleeves are ideal for applications involving extended distances between shaft ends, mill motors and limited end floats. Known for their durability, Lovejoy nylon sleeve gear couplings are best suited for light industrial applications such as generator sets, motor pumps, and motor / generator sets.

Working Mechanism

Lovejoy gear couplings transmit torque via hubs with crowned gear teeth that are in permanent mesh with the straight gear teeth of sleeves. This unique design provides the highest torque transmission for the smallest size. Lovejoy gear couplings run at high speeds, conform to the AGMA bolting pattern and compensate for angular, radial and axial shaft misalignments.

Features

Continuous sleeve gear couplings (C, CMM, CSPCR, CCS & CSHP Types):

  • Lovejoy's continuous sleeve couplings are all steel gear couplings comprising a single sleeve and two hubs to allow simple installation.
  • These Lovejoy gear couplings are ideal for applications requiring horizontal & vertical orientation, full-flex, flex-rigid, mill-motor, disengagement, sliding hubs, shear pin, floating shaft, and spacers.
  • They have a patented & tested Buna-N seal design that features reinforced washers bonded to the inside edges for positively retaining lubricant and sealing the interior from outside contaminants.

Flanged sleeve gear couplings (F, FRR, FARR, FMM, FFS, FSPCR, FSL FSLX, FSHP, FSHPB, FVX, FLEF, FLA, FLAFR, FLAMM, FLHD, FLHDFR, FA, FAFR & FAMM Types):

  • Flanged sleeve couplings from Lovejoy feature all steel sleeves & hubs combined with patented Vari-Crown tooth design to offer long coupling life.
  • They are ideal for applications requiring horizontal and vertical orientation.
  • These flanged Lovejoy gear couplings have a piloted gear fit to provide high speeds and less vibration.

Nylon sleeve gear couplings (Nyflex, Mite & Dentex Types):

  • Lovejoy nylon gear couplings are compact and require no lubrication. They operate over a temperature range of -40 degrees to 150 degrees Fahrenheit, at speeds up to 5000 RPM.
  • These Lovejoy gear couplings feature precision molded sleeves and hubs with no bolts, pins, flanges or protrusions for maintaining balance / safety.
  • For Dentex & Nyflex couplings, the nylon sleeve allows misalignment up to 5 degrees, while Mite couplings allow misalignment up to 3 degrees.

Compatible Accessories

  • Lovejoy Accessory Kitsfor Standard Lovejoy Continuous Sleeve Gear Couplings: These kits include a seal for the hub that disengages to eliminate friction when the hub is turning in the sleeve.

Standards and Approvals

  • Lovejoy inch dimensioned straight gear coupling hub bores with keyways comply with ANSI / AGMA 9002-B04 standards.
  • Lovejoy metric dimensioned straight gear hub bores with keyways comply with ANSI / AGMA 9112-A04 standards.

Installation

  • Hub & Sleeve Fits: Select the type of hub fit (clearance / interference / locational). In high speed applications, it is necessary to have an interference fit to counteract centrifugal force effects on shaft / hub contact pressure. Hub cracks and hub failure may occur due to excessive hub interference.
  • Keys & Keyway Fits: In order to reduce fatigue cracking, keyways need to have a suitable radius, and key lengths should be measured to minimise coupling imbalance.
  • Hub Bore: Make sure the hub bore is concentric to minimise hub runout.
  • Hub Installation: Select the proper heating magnitude for interference fit hubs so that the hub slides smoothly over the shaft. Do not use a hammer to install or remove hubs, as this can damage bearings.
  • Correct Coupling Gap: In cases where the coupling gap between floating shafts is small, they may impact each other under misalignment as the shaft oscillates.
  • Proper Sealing: Be sure to use proper gaskets and O-rings to ensure that the lubricant stays in the coupling.
  • Alignment: The misalignment of the coupling must not exceed the manufacturer's tolerances for offset, angular & axial misalignment.
  • Fastener Assembly: Make sure that fasteners are the correct size / length, exposed or shrouded, and arranged correctly. Standard bolts will work but they may put the threads in the shear plane. To ensure the correct preload for coupling bolts, proper bolt torque methods must be used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Raptor Supplies sell other types of Lovejoy couplings?

Yes, Raptor Supplies offers an entire catalogue of Lovejoy couplings including rigid couplings & grid couplings. Also check out our collection of Lovejoy jaw coupling hubs and coupling spiders.

How important is it to choose the right coupling?

Getting the right coupling is quite important, as it lowers the stress on pumps and motors and also decreases the chances of flexibility or misalignment.

Which type of coupling is used with two non coaxial shafts?

Non flanged couplings are used with two non coaxial shafts. Oldham couplings, universal couplings and cushion couplings are examples of non-flanged couplings.

What are the types of gear couplings?

Lovejoy gear couplings are available in two types - flanged sleeve and continuous sleeve. Flanged gear couplings consist of short sleeves enclosed by a perpendicular flange, in which one sleeve is set on each pole so that two flanges line up face to face. Continuous sleeve gear couplings have shaft ends coupled together and adjoined against one another, which is then enveloped by a sleeve.

How does a Lovejoy gear coupling work?

Lovejoy gear couplings are manufactured to transfer torque between two shafts that are not properly positioned. These gear couplings attach the drive motor to the gearbox in hoist mechanisms, and can also connect the gearbox directly to small wire rope drums using a flanged half.
