Working Mechanism

  • To produce a detecting zone, the inductive proximity sensor generates an electromagnetic field near the sensor's face.
  • When a metal target in the sensor's vicinity disturbs that field and reaches the 'operate point', a detection happens and the sensor turns on.
  • The sensor turns off when the target moves away from the sensor and reaches the 'release point'.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the types of proximity sensors?

There are three types of optical proximity sensors: through-beam, retro-reflective and diffuser sensors.

What is the difference between inductive and capacitive proximity sensors?

Inductive sensors identify metal targets when they are close to an inductive coil sensor, whereas capacitive sensors identify changes in capacitance between a sensor and an electrode.

What is an NPN and PNP proximity sensor?

PNP sensors output a positive signal to industrial control input, whereas NPN sensors output a negative signal when they are turned on.
