Wedge Anchors

Wedge anchors are suitable for anchoring fixtures / objects into hard surfaces like concrete, brick or blocks. Raptor Supplies offers a wide range of wedge anchors from brands like Grainger, MKT Fastening, Cooper B-Line, Powers Fasteners and Red Head. These anchors are installed into pre-drilled holes where their wedge expands for securely gripping the material.

Features

  • Wedge anchors use a nut for tightening them on anchored surfaces.
  • The attached washer is used to prevent the nuts from digging into the anchored surface.
  • They are used in concrete and provide consistent holding force.
  • Sleeve-type wedge anchors are used in concrete, bricks or blocks, but provide less holding force in terms of shear & pullout values.
  • Selected models have eye-type heads and can be used as hangers to hang objects.
  • Siesmic wedge anchors can handle the increased load effect created by earthquakes or vibrations.
  • MKT Fastening seismic wedge anchors have coarse threading and are recommended for medium to heavy seismic design loads.
  • Power Fasteners wedge anchors feature steel construction with zinc plating or stainless steel construction for withstanding outdoor conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to install wedge anchors?

  • Drill a hole in the concrete surface as deep as the anchor's length.
  • Clean the concrete dust inside the hole for proper fastening.
  • Place the anchor assembly (with nut & washer) through the fixture to be fastened into the drilled hole.
  • Tap the anchor on the nut / head to make sure that the threading is below the concrete's surface.
  • Tighten the nut using a wrench up to the required torque limits.
  • This expands the anchor's base and securely holds the concrete.

Can users remove wedge anchors once installed?

  • Generally, concrete anchors can not be removed from concrete, brick or block surfaces after installation without damaging the anchored or base material.
  • But some measures can be taken to ensure proper removal. If you choose a stud-type wedge anchor, install it by drilling a hole having depth twice the length of the wedge anchor. When you need to remove the anchor assembly, pound the wedge anchor into the hole until it becomes flush with the base material. Saw off the wedge anchor stud using a hacksaw or cutoff wheel at the surface of the base material.
  • If you choose a sleeve-type wedge anchor, follow the same installation principle. To remove the anchor assembly, remove the attached nut & washer and the round / flat head of the sleeve anchor. Pound the sleeve anchor's remaining threaded stud into the base material. If you can't pound the sleeve anchor into the base material, cut the stud off using a hacksaw or cutoff wheel to remove the wedge anchors.
  • Note: Wedge anchors left after the removal operation are not reusable.

What are some factors that users should keep in mind while installing wedge anchors?

  • A wedge anchor should be drilled & installed in concrete that has been set for a minimum of 28 days, to prevent any decrease in holding force.
  • When the wedge anchor is inserted through a hole in the material being fastened, the hole should be larger than the wedge anchor's diameter. Its surface should also have space for a nut & washer.
  • A wedge anchor is used for fastening only static loads (load that does not move). Wedge anchors are not suitable for applications that face vibrations or shock loads.
