A pulley is a wheel that carries a flexible rope, cord, cable or chain on its rim and a sheave is a rotating groove inside the pulley where the rope fits.
Variable pitch pulleys allow the technician to increase or decrease drive speed (within seconds) while the machine is in operation. This pulley also maximises the efficiency of the drive system and alters static pressure around the drive.
The grooves cradle the rope / chain which allows an increase in the bearing pressure on the rope, thus creating a gripping action and increased traction during the operation.
