How to measure a taper pin?

• Identify whether the pin requirements are imperial or metric.
• For standard internal & external thread metric taper pins, measure the pin's small end for the diameter. Pin length is calculated by measuring the pin end to end.
• To measure standard and internally threaded taper pins, their diameters are measured from the pin's large end, and their effective lengths are measured from end to end.
• Diameters of externally threaded taper pins are measured at the widest point just before the taper transitions to the threaded tang. The length of these pins is also measured from this point to the pin's small end, thus eliminating the threaded portion of the pin from the effective length.

These pins are also known as lineup taper punches and are used to line up holes by driving through existing pin, rivet & bolt holes in multiple metal pieces.

• These pins are used to align structural components such as angle irons and I-beams for riveting, bolting and welding.
• They are also called barrel drift pins.
• When one side of these alignment pins wears out, the other side can be used.

What are no-strike hex head alignment pin sets?

• These pins feature tapered shafts to eliminate the need for prying and hammering while aligning flange bolt holes.
• For aligning bolt holes, put the pin's tapered end into the holes in the bolts and use a wrench on the hex head for rotating and aligning the holes.
• Choose the smaller sized pin if the bolt hole falls between two specified sizes.
