Seismic Wedge Anchors

Seismic wedge anchors are fully threaded, torque-controlled anchors that are designed to perform consistently in cracked / uncracked concrete. Raptor Supplies offers a large selection of wedge anchors from Red Head, Strong-Tie, Mkt Fastening and Powers Fasteners. These steel / carbon steel / stainless steel anchors resist bending & breaking under heavy loads. They are available in thread lengths ranging from 1-5/16 to 6.875 inches.

Features

  • These units use a mechanical wedging mechanism to connect structural and non-structural elements in construction applications.
  • They can be easily installed within pre-drilled holes.
  • These wedge anchors are intended for structural & lightweight concrete, as well as concrete over metal decks.
  • Mkt Fastening anchors having pre-marked embedment depths allow precise installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do these anchors have zinc plating?

These units have zinc plating that is corrosion-resistant and slows rusting for up to 30 years by resisting moisture in air molecules. It also provides high-temperature tolerance up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

How do you install wedge anchors?

  • Drill a hole in concrete using a hammer drill and a carbide-tipped drill bit having the same diameter as the diameter of the concrete wedge anchor being installed.
  • Drill the hole at least 1/2 inch deeper than the concrete wedge anchor will penetrate or 1/2 inch deeper than the minimum embedment depth.
  • Clear the hole of all debris & dust with a wire brush / compressed air / a vacuum.
  • Thread the nut onto the concrete wedge anchor's threaded end so that the top of the nut is flush with the top of the anchor. This will prevent thread damage during installation.
  • Insert the clipped end of the wedge anchor into the predrilled hole.
  • If the concrete wedge anchor is being installed through a hole in a fixture, ensure that the diameter of the hole is greater than the diameter of the anchor.
  • Strike the nutted end with a hammer until at least 6 threads are below the surface of the concrete or the item being attached.
  • Tighten the nut with your fingers.
  • Turn the nut clockwise 2 to 3 times (using a wrench) or until the proper torque values for the diameter of the wedge anchor are obtained.

What are the advantages of using seismic wedge anchors over other anchoring methods?

Seismic wedge anchors offer advantages such as ease of installation, high load-bearing capacity, resistance to vibration and seismic forces and suitability for a wide range of base materials and applications.

What safety precautions should I follow when using seismic wedge anchors?

  • Before use, inspect the seismic wedge anchors for any damage or defects. Do not use anchors that show signs of wear or damage.
  • Wear appropriate PPE, including safety glasses, gloves and a hard hat, to protect yourself from potential hazards during installation.
  • Clear the work area of any debris or obstacles that could interfere with the installation process.
  • Use the correct tools and equipment for installing these wedge anchors. This may include Bosch round hammer drills, drill bits, torque wrenches and safety gears.
  • When creating holes for the anchors. Use the appropriate drill bit size and ensure the hole depth and diameter meet the manufacturer's specifications.
  • Position the anchors according to the approved engineering plans and specifications. Ensure proper spacing and alignment to provide adequate support.
  • Insert the anchors into the drilled holes to the required depth as specified by the manufacturer. Do not exceed the maximum embedment depth to avoid compromising the anchor's performance.
  • Use a calibrated torque wrench to tighten the anchor bolts to the specified torque value. Over-tightening or under-tightening can affect the anchor's holding capacity.

What are the factors to consider while choosing these seismic wedge anchors?

Major factors include load capacity, material compatibility, corrosion resistance, installation method, code compliance, environmental conditions, seismic performance and spacing.
