Left Hand Inserts

Left-hand inserts are ideal for repairing stripped threads or creating new threads in a drilled hole to install left-hand threaded fasteners. Raptor Supplies offers these left-hand inserts from Chrislynn. They provide more strength, versatility & resilience than the fasteners installed inside traditional threaded holes. They have left-handed threads (also called reverse threads) for specialised applications like automotive, heating & plumbing pipes and gas supply valves, where right-hand threaded fasteners would loosen due to pressure.

Features

  • Left-hand inserts create strong internal threading on various materials like metals, polymers, wood & composites.
  • They provide a strong, leak-tight connection to the fastener while preventing wear or over-torque.
  • The left-hand threads create incompatibility or a safety / defence factor for preventing gradual loosening due to torque or pressure.
  • These left-hand helical threaded inserts are equipped with a tang / prong at the end for ease of installation.
  • They are available in Imperial & Metric sizes.
  • The standard length of left-handed precision inserts from Chrislynn is 1.5 times their diameter.
  • These free-running inserts are made of 304 stainless steel for outdoor operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are left-hand inserts larger in diameter than the tapped hole before installation?

Left-hand inserts feature a slightly larger diameter compared to the tapped hole diameter before installation, as the leading coil's diameter decreases when the installation tool applies torque to the insert's prong / tang. After these threaded inserts get installed, they act as a spring to expand outward onto the material and provide strong anchoring.

Why do these left-hand inserts have open ends?

These inserts have an open end for allowing the installation of fasteners with a longer length than them.

What accessories are compatible with these left-hand inserts?

Installation of these left-hand inserts requires a drill bit, a tapping tool, an installation tool and a prong break-off tool. Selected models come in a kit containing all these tools.

How to determine the length of the left-hand insert required?

  • Length of a helical left-hand insert should be at least as long as the desired screw diameter. Users may choose longer inserts for increased strength.
  • The exact insert length can vary depending upon the application & the material in which the insert is being installed. Hard materials like steel do not need long inserts. For soft materials like aluminium, a longer insert may be preferable.

How to install a helical left-hand insert?

  • Drill a hole according to the length of the insert / screw / bolt to be installed.
  • Thread the drilled hole using a tapping tool.
  • Thread the insert into the tapped hole using an installation tool by properly gripping the insert's prong.
  • Wind the insert inside the hole up to a quarter to half turn below the hole's surface.
  • Remove the prong using a prong break-off tool or punch to allow full passage of the fastener into the insert.

Can thread inserts be removed once installed?

Yes, some thread inserts can be removed using removal tools that attach to them & unwind them in the direction opposite to that used during installation.
