Imperial Keyed Shafts

Keyed shafts with a keyway-cut design are suitable for use with motors to reduce vibrations and achieve tighter tolerances, as compared to keyless models. These cold-drawn shafts are available in different materials to suit a wide variety of applications, such as Grade 1045 carbon steel construction for secondary operations, machine-grade aluminium option for robotic applications and stainless steel shafts for food processing applications. Choose from a wide range of these polished keyed shafts, available in diameters ranging from 5/16 to 5/8 inches on Raptor Supplies.

Metric Keyed Shafts

Features

  • These keyed shafts feature a rectangular-shaped key slot along their full length for reduced slippage.
  • They have aluminium / carbon steel Grade 1045 or 304 / 316 stainless steel construction to resist corrosion and structural rigidity.
  • Keyshaft imperial keyed shafts come in diameters ranging from 5/16 to 2.5 inches.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between spline shafts & keyed shafts?

Spline shafts contain teeth / ridges on their outer surface to mate with other components and help in the uniform torque transmission between mated components. They are primarily used for high torque applications while resisting regular wear & tear. Keyed shafts are shafts having a key seat that works with their corresponding key to transfer rotational power. These keyed shafts are cheaper to use and do not require a complete redesign of their machinery according to spline shaft design.

How to install these keyed shafts?

  • Determine the correct shaft size and keyway dimensions.
  • Prepare the shaft and components by ensuring they are clean and free of debris or contaminants.
  • Install the key by sliding it into the keyway on the shaft, ensuring it fits snugly and extends slightly beyond the shaft diameter on both sides.
  • Mount the component by sliding it onto the shaft, ensuring it is aligned with the key.
  • Tighten the fasteners that hold the component to the shaft, ensuring they are tightened evenly and to the manufacturer's recommended torque specifications.
  • Check the installation by rotating the shaft & components to ensure they rotate smoothly without any binding or misalignment.
  • Lubricate the assembly by applying lubricant to the key and keyway to ensure smooth operation.

What factors should be considered when selecting the size of a key for a keyed shaft?

When selecting the size of a key, consider factors like the amount of torque to be transmitted, shaft diameter, keyway dimensions (Imperial keyways or Metric keyways) and the material of the key.

What maintenance is required for keyed shafts?

  • Maintenance for keyed shafts involves periodic inspection for wear and proper key engagement.
  • If a key becomes damaged or worn, it should be replaced to maintain the integrity of the connection.
  • Lubrication may also be required in some cases to overcome friction and reduce wear.

How do you remove a component from a keyed shaft?

  • First, remove any fasteners or set screws holding the component in place.
  • Then, carefully tap or slide the component off the shaft.
  • Finally, remove the key from the keyway, which allows for the disassembly of the components.
