JS Series Jaw Coupling Hub

Ruland Manufacturing JS Series curved jaw coupling hubs are designed for transmitting torque and rotatory action between two shafts, to accommodate shaft misalignment in servo motor applications. These jaw coupling hubs feature a three-piece assembly including two hubs and a spider (available separately), for smooth interaction between components. They have a single beam in the centre and grooves on outer edges to counter misalignment between the connecting shafts and dampen shocks & vibrations. Choose from a wide range of these aluminium jaw coupling hubs, available in JS10, JS12, JS16, JS21, JS26, JS32 and JS36 coupling sizes.
Raptor Supplies also offers Ruland Manufacturing JSC Series jaw coupling hubs, supplied with a keyway for fitting a hub over the shaft.

Jaw Coupling Hubs

Jaw couplings are a type of flexible couplings designed to link two rotating shafts that are not properly aligned for transferring the rotational power or torque from one shaft to another. The jaw couplings are suitable for diverse industrial applications due to their versatile & robust construction and good speed capability, chemical resistance & dampening capability. Jaw couplings are easy to install, as they consist of only two jaw coupling hubs and a spider. These jaw coupling hubs are attached to the shafts and the spider flexes between the hubs for accommodating the misalignment & shocks. Shaft misalignments are mostly radial, parallel or angular and cause complications to transferring rotational power from one shaft to the other in the form of loads, vibrations, stresses and other forces, which change as per the type of misalignment.
The jaw coupling hubs are popular due to their fail-safe design that ensures interlocking of the coupling & continued operation (up to a certain extent) even after the elastomeric spider fails, wears out or gets loosened. Unlike gear, grid or chain couplings, jaw coupling hubs are also maintenance-free as they do not require periodic application of grease or additional maintenance (provided that the spider remains intact). These jaw coupling hubs are made of cast iron, powder metal, sintered iron, sintered carbon steel, steel or zinc alloy to ensure high compression strength and durability. They are also offered in aluminium or stainless steel construction for lightweight and resistance to corrosion in food & pharmaceutical environments.
Lovejoy jaw coupling hubs are available in two broad types: straight jaw coupling hubs and curved jaw coupling hubs. Straight jaw hubs are made from a diverse range of materials and feature straight jaws for adjusting to various styles of spiders. They are used with open centre spiders, snap wrap spiders with retainer rings; closed centre spiders having Nitrile Butadiene (Buna N), urethane, Hytrel or bronze construction. Curved jaw coupling hubs (Lovejoy CJ Series) on the other hand, feature a curved jaw profile that concentrates the torque to the central region of the spider's limbs, thereby improving the efficiency of the elastomer material and reduces rotational backlash. They are mostly used with open centre elastomeric spiders to accommodate shafts having little separation.
Choose from a wide range of these jaw coupling hubs, available in both unbored and bored variants on Raptor Supplies. The bored variants are offered in bore sizes ranging from 1/8 to 4 inches.

Uses

Jaw coupling hubs are ideal for linking two shafts when used in conjunction with elastomeric inserts or spiders to form couplings. These jaw coupling hubs are used in a wide range of motion control (servo) applications, such as conveyors, escalators, motor vehicles, forestry, agricultural & mining equipment in robotics, automobile, aeronautics and space industries.

Features

  • Jaw coupling hubs in conjunction with spiders form jaw couplings and are used to transmit rotational power from one shaft to another.
  • They are equipped with an optional bore or a hole at the centre of the hub for ease of mounting on the shafts. Users can identify the bore size or bore diameter of a hub for selecting a correct sized jaw coupling hub for their use.
  • These hub bores may also have keyway slots to fit a key and prevent slipping of the hub on the rotating shaft. Keyway size indicates the height and width of the keyway slot to fit in the right sized key.
  • The jaw coupling hubs have an effective length through the bore to help them slide-fit on the shaft & the optional key.
  • These hubs handle the torque from the driving shaft and pass it onto a driven shaft while handling shocks, vibrations & angular misalignment. Torque refers to the applied force causing rotational motion. In imperial units, torque is expressed as inch-pounds (in.-lbs.) whereas, in metrics, it is expressed as Newton-meters (Nm).
  • They have diverse types of designs, constructions and bore tolerances for handling a wide range of rotational speeds (maximum speed).
  • These jaw coupling hubs feature fail-safe mechanism for continuing the operation up to a certain time, in case the shock-absorbing spider inserts wear down or fail to interlock.
  • They provide highly reliable service without any metal to metal contact to prevent regular wear & tear.
  • These jaw coupling hubs are resistant to oil, dirt, moisture & grease for ensuring long term operation.

Working Mechanism

A jaw coupling is made of three parts: two metallic hubs (jaw coupling hub) and an elastomer insert / element or spider. The spider has many lobes to fit the jaws of hubs alternatively for a tight press fit. Once the machinery starts running & the driving shaft starts rotating, the hub jaws attached to the driving shaft push towards the driven hub jaws and thereby towards the stationary shaft.
The jaws being locked together leads to torque transfer and rotation of the stationary shaft. The jaw coupling torque is then transmitted through the elastomer / spider lobes compressed between the hub jaws. These elastomeric spider legs act as coupling absorbers and help in cushioning the force between the driving & driven jaws. They absorb the vibration and shock from torque transfer and consequently protect the surrounding components from getting damaged.

Standards and Approvals

  • Lovejoy jaw coupling hubs meet the ANSI/AGMA 9002-B04 or 9112-A04 and ISO 9001:2008 industry standards for superior performance of the hubs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to install a jaw coupling hub?

Users can install jaw coupling hubs by following these steps:
  • The customers should first buy a spider according to the selected hub (preferably from the same corresponding series) having the same specifications & parameters.
  • After purchase, they should ensure that each component is free from contaminants, defects or cracks and match the shaft diameter to the bore size of the hubs.
  • Before starting the coupling installation, users should ensure that the machinery is disconnected from all power sources. They should also not install it on unstable or moving equipment.
  • The hubs having key slots should be fitted with the keys and slid fit into shafts for preventing slipping during shaft rotation. The keyless hubs can be attached directly to shafts using set screws.
  • The users should insert a spider into a hub while ensuring that the spider opening is large enough to fit both the shaft & the optional key. Selected jaw coupling hubs can be overhung slightly or be moved back on the shafts for adjusting according to misalignments in shaft separation.
  • Then, the second hub is brought near the first hub while keeping the guidelines in mind, such as the gap between hub faces.
  • Users should check the set screw tightness & alignment before testing to prevent possible misalignment.
  • Now the coupling is ready for operation, users should remove any material or tool away from the shaft and coupler. The equipment is ready to start up and test.

What is the difference between rigid and flexible jaw coupling?

Rigid couplings offer a rigid connection between two shafts that are firmly connected. They transfer torque smoothly throughout the system. These rigid couplings can't handle misalignment and shocks. Flexible couplings like jaw coupling hubs provide flexible connections and hence, can withstand shocks & misalignment up to a certain extent. However, there is a chance of some losses during torque transfer while using flexible jaw coupling.

What are some common mistakes the users make while selecting a jaw coupling hub?

Some common mistakes users make while selecting jaw coupling hubs are:
  • Failing to check maximum bore capacity: Users should always check the shaft size of the driving equipment before purchasing a jaw coupling.
  • Using same size couplings everywhere: Using the one-size-fits-all approach may seem like a good idea to prevent downtime. But an oversized or undersized jaw coupling may cause malfunctioning in motors and failed couplings.
  • Ignoring heat and chemical compatibility: Since the jaw couplings require purchasing of both hubs and spiders, the customers should take note that both the coupling hub & spider materials are compatible with the required environments.
  • Overlooking space restrictions: Users should make sure that the selected couplings according to required torque applications can fit the provided space. High torque applications require either a large diameter coupling to handle high torque or coupling with different designs & high torque density.

How to choose the right jaw coupling hub?

Customers can choose the right jaw coupling hubs for their needs according to the following points:
  • Determining the usage.
  • Choosing the material considering the intended application environment.
  • Selecting the coupling on the basis of torque, speed, bore size and other factors.
  • Jaw coupling hub types are based on usage and their ability to handle the degree of movement or rotation. For example, curved jaw coupling hubs (Lovejoy CJ Series) transfer high torque and can handle some degree of rotation (backlash) due to their curved jaw design.

What is the difference between keyway and keyless jaw coupling hubs?

Selected models of jaw coupling hubs feature a cutout slot in the mating part (hub) of the couplings, known as keyways. These slots or keyways fit in the keys or a separate mechanical attachment on the shafts or other mated tools. The use of "Keys" leads to improved torque & prevents slipping. It also results in reduced losses due to vibrations & backlash (degree of free movement between two rotating, mating parts).
However, some applications do not require keys, as keyless jaw coupling hubs use only set screw holding power to transfer torque. Keyless hubs are ideal for applications that cause no damages or injuries even if the shafts slip. Keyed jaw coupling hubs concentrate the stresses around the key or key slot, causing maintenance issues and efficiency losses. Keyless hubs distribute the load & hence require less maintenance.
