Farm Duty Motors

Farm duty motors produce high starting torque and facilitate moderate starting current for conveyors, barn cleaners, compressors and manure pumps. These pre-lubricated units feature an epoxy finish for resistance against high temperature & moisture, offering smooth movement of the motor components. Raptor Supplies offers a wide range of these farm duty motors from brands like Baldor, Century, Dayton, Marathon Motors and Leeson. Baldor farm motors feature double-sealed bearings to reduce the frictional losses and prevent overheating. These farm duty motors are also integrated with a condensate drain valve to remove the excess moisture condensed by cooling of the motor, which may lead to corrosion of motor parts and bursting of the pump when the water freezes. Dayton farm duty motors are capable of delivering continuous-duty operations in applications like aeration fans, auger drives, grain stirrers, irrigation tower drives and crop driers. These agricultural motors feature steel frame construction for structural rigidity and withstanding heavy impact loads. They further come equipped with a totally enclosed non-ventilated enclosure with gasketed capacitor covers, junction boxes and shaft slinger for preventing the ingress of external contaminants and motor damage. Totally enclosed farm duty motors from these brands prevent the entrance of insects, rodents and other foreign materials.

Uses

These farm duty motors are suitable for low to high starting torque applications in the aggregate & cement, air handling, food & beverage, chemical, oil and gas industries.

Century Motors

General Purpose Leeson Farm Duty Motors

  • Leeson general purpose farm duty motors are ideal for rugged use in commercial and industrial settings and are widely used in pumps, compressors, blowers and fans.
  • The brand's single and three-phase AC motors are explosion proof and designed for continuous duty applications in agriculture, woodworking and metallurgy industries.
  • They feature double sealed ball bearings for prolonged service life and a gasket capacitor case having a conduit box cover to prevent the entry of foreign contaminants.
  • These units are available in single and 3 phase motor designs for powerful performance.

Marathon Farm Duty Motors

  • Marathon farm duty motors are suitable for power generating applications in the automotive, food & beverage, marine and oil & gas industries.
  • These high torque motors are single-phase units having one / two speed operation.
  • They have totally enclosed fan cooled, totally enclosed air over or totally enclosed non ventilated enclosures to suit multiple applications.
  • Further, these units are supplied with thru bolts for quick and secure fastening.
  • These motors have a direct drive option (incorporating auger drive in selected models), providing maximum speed and positional & dynamic accuracy.

Working Mechanism

Farm duty AC motors work on the principle of magnetism as they contain two fixed magnets and a coil of wire surrounding a shaft. When an electric charge is applied to the coil of wire, it becomes an electromagnet, hence generating a magnetic field. The equipped stator includes a loop of wire, solid metal axle, coil, squirrel cage made of metal bars and some other freely rotating metal parts that are capable of conducting electricity. In an AC motor, sending power to the outer coils make up the stator & the coils energise in sequence & pairs, generating a magnetic field that rotates around the motor.

Standards and Approvals

  • Dayton motors are manufactured in compliance with ISO industry standard to deliver high quality product services.
  • Baldor motors are UL listed, NEMA rated and also comply with CSA & CE certifications.
  • Century farm duty motors are UL listed and adheres to CSA standards.
  • Leeson duty AC motors are UL and CSA recognised.
  • Marathon motors have NEMA ratings to guarantee a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of foreign objects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What general safety instructions should be followed while operating Baldor motors?

  • Avoid overtightening of belts as this may cause shaft breakage or premature bearing failure.
  • Allow clearance for end to end shaft movement.
  • Direct coupled machines should be precisely aligned and the shaft should rotate smoothly without any binding.

What are the factors to consider while purchasing a motor?

  • A current powers the motor, but excessive current can damage the motor as well. For DC motors, stall and operating current are important. Stall current applies sufficient torque for the motor to run either at stall speed or 0 RPM. This is the maximum amount of current the motor can draw. Overcurrent may lead to a rise in heat, resulting in wire melting.
  • Voltage is important as it keeps net current flowing in a single direction and overcomes back current. The higher the voltage, the higher the torque. Make sure that the recommended voltage is applied. If you apply very low voltage, the motor will not work, while applying too much voltage can lead to a short-circuit and consequently result in power loss or complete failure.
  • Operating torque is the amount of torque produced by the motor, while stall torque generates when you apply power from stall speed. The user must look at the required operating torque, but some applications require knowing how far to push the motor. For example, with a wheeled robot, good torque means good acceleration, but you should make sure the stall torque is high enough to lift the weight of the robot. In this case, torque is more important than speed.
  • Velocity or speed can be complex in regards to motors. Generally, a motor runs smoothly & efficiently at the highest speed, but it is not always possible if gearing is needed. Adding gears will reduce the motor efficiency, so reduce both the speed and torque simultaneously.
