Conical Washers

Grainger conical washers, also known as Belleville washers, are used with structural bolts for compensating against non-parallel surfaces in beams & channels. They are ideal for structural levelling applications in the automotive, chemical, energy, distribution, pump & valve manufacturing, utility transmission and automation industries. These Belleville washers also compensate for thermal contraction and expansion on bolted joints.

Features

  • Grainger conical or Belleville washers are used as disc springs and have a conical shape that allows them to work like a robust spring & provide high spring loads in compact spaces.
  • They have a convex disc that is supported by forces on the centre & exterior.
  • Belleville disc spring washers can achieve extensive forces with small spring lengths.
  • They can be loaded along the axis dynamically or statically.
  • These washers produce negligible movement throughout the compression process.
  • They are ideal for stress relaxation between a washer and bolt.
  • These washers are available in thicknesses ranging from 0.2 to 6 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are conical washers measured?

  • Use the smaller jaw on the calliper for measuring the washer's inside diameter.
  • Close the calliper and gently open the calliper with the thumbscrew until both jaws firmly touch the washer.
  • Note down the measurement that appears on the screen.

How to install a conical washer?

The washer should be installed in such a way that the teeth of the conical tooth washer should be facing the hitch, thus preventing it from loosening.

How do Belleville washers work?

Conical or Belleville spring washers keep assemblies tight by maintaining a high level of tension and serving as shock absorbers on vibrating parts.

Can conical washers be reused?

  • Yes, they can be used repeatedly..
  • Over-torquing and overloading these washers may wear them out over time.

How do Belleville washers fail?

  • Belleville washers, like all springs, are susceptible to breaking under heavy loads or extreme strains.
  • They can support large loads, but care must be taken not to exceed their maximum stress and load capacity.

How to install Belleville washers?

  • Belleville washers, also known as disc spring washers, can be installed in single, series, parallel or series / parallel configurations.
  • The single Belleville washer configuration features a singular washer paired with a machine screw or bolt. The washer is placed with the centre protruding away from the workpiece and contacting the fastener head.
  • The parallel configuration comprises two or more washers stacked on top of one another, allowing them to have complete surface contact with each other. The load tolerance is increased in multiples of the number of washers added (Eg: two washers double the load tolerance, three washers triple it, and so on).
  • The series configuration features two or more washers stacked on top of each other in such a manner that only the centre face and the ends come in contact with each other. Similar to the parallel configuration, this configuration also increases deflection tolerances in multiples of the number of washers added.
  • The series / parallel configuration stacks three or more washers together in a series and parallel combination, increasing both deflection and load tolerances incrementally based on the number of washers being added or removed from the stack.
