Blank Helical Inserts

Chrislynn blank inserts are designed to cover unused holes and then remove when the assembly is ready for expansion. These solid inserts are threaded on the outside with wedges (keys) attached to the top of the insert. The inserts are screwed into the part and the wedges are then driven down into the tapped threads for keeping the insert from turning in either direction. They can be used in situations where a nonstandard size combination is needed. Choose from a huge variety of Chrislynn blank inserts, available in carbon steel and 303 stainless steel variants, on Raptor Supplies.

Features

  • Chrislynn blank helical inserts are of the key locking type and have a solid one-piece body.
  • They are available in both Imperial & Metric sizes and steel & stainless steel variants.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to choose the appropriate dimensions of a helical insert?

The helical insert length should be equal to the desired fastener diameter. Users may choose longer inserts than required for increased strength and holding power. The exact insert length may also vary based on the base material. Hard materials like steel do not need long inserts, whereas soft materials like aluminium require a longer insert.

What is the difference between helical and key locking thread inserts?

  • Helical inserts are mostly free-running and allow attachment with metal fasteners without using any coating or lubricant. They are ideal for particle-free environments and can expand after installation to secure themselves in the base material.
  • Key locking inserts form the strongest hold of all threaded inserts on soft metal surfaces using their distorted internal threads / locking keys. They prevent slipping or rotating by driving into the surrounding material. They have high strength, owing to their solid, one-piece metal construction, unlike helical inserts that are made of coiled wire.

How to install a key-locking thread insert?

  • Drill a hole according to the required application and tap the drilled hole.
  • Engage keys of the insert into vertical slots of the installation tool and wind the insert into the hole till it is flush with the top of the surface.
  • Lift & rotate the tool to drive the key into the material till the keys are even on top of the insert.

Can blank helical inserts be removed once installed?

Yes, key locking inserts or rock solid inserts can be removed by bending the locking keys out of the material and using a winding tool to remove the insert out of the base material in the direction opposite to that used during installation.

What are the advantages of a locking rock solid insert?

Locking rock solid inserts have locking keys swaged in the groove for forming internal thread lock and preventing rotation of the inserts.

What are the advantages of a rock solid insert?

  • Simple installation & removal.
  • They are nearly impossible to turn or cross thread while / after installation.
  • Rock solid inserts do not require adhesives to hold them in place.
  • They are rarely impacted by cold or hot temperatures as they are secured mechanically.
